Perrigo Company Becomes First Company Worldwide to Earn NSF Registration for Nutritional Supplement Manufacturing Facilities
The Perrigo Company (NASDAQ: PRGO), the nation's leading manufacturer of store brand over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, vitamins and nutritional supplements, announced today that it is the first company globally to successfully earn the National Sanitary Foundation International (NSF) Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Registration for vitamin and nutritional supplement production.
NSF, a world leader in standards development, product certification, education and risk-management services for public health and safety, has established the new benchmark in quality for manufacturers of vitamins and nutritional supplements. NSF conducted a plant audit of Perrigo's vitamins and nutritional supplement facility in Greenville, South Carolina. In the audit, NSF verified that Perrigo complied with its GMPs, which are guidelines that provide a system of processes, procedures and documentation to assure the product produced has the identity, strength, composition, quality and purity that it is represented to possess. NSF will conduct ongoing audits of Perrigo's facility on a semiannual basis to ensure continuous quality.
Michael Bradley, Perrigo's Director of Nutritional Scientific Affairs, commented, "NSF's manufacturing plant GMP registration program has adopted the industry's dietary supplement GMP recommendations from the FDA. These GMPs have been implemented by NSF and the National Nutritional Foods Association (NNFA). The strategic alliance between NSF and NNFA has presented to the Dietary Supplements industry a rigorous set of manufacturing practices designed to ensure the quality and consistency of products produced in GMP conforming manufacturing facilities. We are pleased to receive this third party validation of the excellence of our manufacturing practices and feel this will bolster customer and consumer confidence in the quality of Perrigo products.
"Being the first company to earn this registration, we believe, is evidence of our continued commitment to setting the standard for quality in the industry. Perrigo's nutritional business has followed the same high standards of quality as our over-the-counter pharmaceutical business, which is regulated by the FDA. We are pleased to finally be recognized for those quality standards," Bradley concluded.
Kathleen Pompliano, NSF Business Development Manager, stated, "We are pleased that Perrigo has earned the NSF GMP registration. This program represents an important step toward ensuring product quality and consumer safety."
